Leaving poems

Leaving Bedford has been an amazing experience - it took an enormous amount of self-control not to cry for most of my last week there as I said goodbye to so many wonderful people who have been so good to me. My farewell preach to Brickhill is available here (dated 21 March). Many were kind enough to send me on my way with best wishes, cards, and even presents. Amongst these were two poems which you can read below. Thanks to everyone who made parting such sweet sorrow.

There was a young man called Luke
Who was no fool of a Took
He’s tying the knot
And becoming a Scot
His departure, it makes me puke!
We’re behind him nevertheless
And we wish him all God’s best
Though Bedford will miss him
Debbie is quids in
We pray their future is blessed!

I’m not suffering from tinnitus
Just thinking about music and Luke Davydaitis
With his musical talent Luke found his place
In the original youth band playing bass
From Brickhill to Stoneleigh with Clark, Little, Bridle, House and many others
Luke’s formative years with his worshipping band of brothers
I’m not suffering from tinnitus
Just thinking about music and Luke Davydaitis

I’m not suffering from tendonitis
Just thinking about sport and Luke Davydaitis
When it comes to football he finds it hard to get excited
On living this far south and supporting Manchester United
And his voice no longer heard, Tuesday nights in Bedford Park
As Jonesy comes crashing through, jumpers for goalposts until dark
I’m not suffering from tendonitis
Just thinking about sport and Luke Davydaitis

I’m not suffering from gastroenteritis
Just thinking about food and Luke Davydaitis
Despite global warming, Luke’s never going green
And the thought of garden on his plate he really finds obscene
Although everyone tells you that veggies do not harm yer
I join with Luke in praising God for the creation of lasagne
I’m not suffering from gastroenteritis
Just thinking about food and Luke Davydaitis

I’m not suffering from cardiovalvulitis
Just thinking about love and Luke Davydaitis
As Brickhill’s most eligible bachelor over recent years
I imagine that without knowing it he’s brought many girls to tears
Luke though has integrity, give credit where it’s due
Holding out for Miss Right and for him, Debbie that’s you
I’m not suffering from cardiovalvulitis
Just thinking about love and Luke Davydaitis

I’m not suffering from tonsillitis
Just thinking about preaching and Luke Davydaitis
I’m pleased it’s at Brickhill that his gift he’s really found
The platform carpet has worn thin where he bounds around
Explaining truth to all of us with humour and with passion
Gripped our attention and our hearts in his own unique fashion
I’m not suffering from tonsillitis
Just thinking about preaching and Luke Davydaitis

Yes, we’ve all been suffering from Luke Davydaitis
And from that there is no cure
We send him north excited by all God’s got in store
We're not suffering from conjunctivitis, just sad to say goodbye to Luke Davydaitis
